Seaman dies, 12 crew members rescued from a cargo ship in Hong Kong

On January 30,  a Chinese man died, and 12 people onboard were rescued by firefighters from a blazing cargo vessel in Hong Kong's southern waters after an explosion.

The ship involved was the Guo Xin 1, a 98-meter-long (322-foot) ship about two to three nautical miles (3.6km to 5.4km) southwest of Lamma, one of Hong Kong's outlying islands. One of the sources said a 51-year-old man was found unconscious in the engine room with severe burns and died.

According to information, investigations suggested the fire started in the ship's engine room. There were 13 crew members – 12 men and a woman – on the ship. Also, the Fire Services Department spokesman said two fireboats and two vessels carrying divers were dispatched to the scene. A total of 14 fire engines and two ambulances were deployed on shore. And a government spokeswoman said the fire was extinguished at 10:46 AM (local time).

The Marine Department said the Guo Xin 1 was a mainland-registered ship that entered Hong Kong waters at daybreak on Monday and that it would follow up on the incident.
