A vessel fire off the coast of St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon (31) resulted in the loss of a boat but ended without injuries after the vessel’s sole occupant was safely rescued from an overturned dinghy, according to the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS).

Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 3:39 p.m. on May 31 following reports of a vessel fire in waters off St. Thomas.

VIFEMS deployed Marine One, its specialized marine firefighting and rescue vessel, to the scene alongside the United States Coast Guard, St. Thomas Rescue, and St. John Rescue. Upon arrival, crews discovered the vessel partially submerged and actively sinking.

The vessel's only occupant was located aboard an overturned dinghy near the scene. The individual was safely rescued by the United States Coast Guard and subsequently transferred to Marine One for evaluation.

According to VIFEMS, the person was assessed on scene and found to be in stable condition. No injuries were reported, and no medical treatment was required.

Despite the successful rescue operation, the vessel could not be saved and was ultimately lost. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire. The VIFEMS Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The coordinated response highlighted the effectiveness of regional maritime emergency services and the importance of rapid intervention in marine emergencies. VIFEMS praised the efforts of all responding agencies and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands.
