Seaspan, a container ship owner, has penned a deal with SpaceX for the use of Starlink internet connectivity across its fleet of ships.

The company has had strong ties with SpaceX since 2021, with the company initially testing out the Starlink flat panel antenna, according to Maritime Executive.

Chris Sepp, the Vice President of Information Technology at Seaspan, said the following on this deal:

“This collaboration with SpaceX Starlink supports Seaspan’s strategic vision of treating any vessel no differently than a remote office from an IT Services and Support provision perspective".

“Crew feedback has been overwhelmingly positive."

Benefits of Starlink for the Shipping Industry...

Starlink will no doubt continue to benefit the shipping and cruise line industry, especially in areas where internet connectivity is either non-existent or patchy in areas.

This will include vessels that are on long-distance routes and could be useful in the future for further transmission of AIS data.

On top of this, Starlink is also going to be cheaper on a per megabyte basis, meaning that, as well as its already heavy presence in the aviation industry, this could very well be a positive factor for the shipping industry as well.

Either way, SpaceX's Starlink will be one to look out for going into the future.
