British authorities have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a passenger aboard the MSC Virtuosa, a cruise ship operated by MSC Cruises. The incident occurred on the evening of May 3, shortly after the vessel departed from Southampton, England.

According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, a 60-year-old man died at approximately 8:30 p.m. following “an altercation” onboard. The ship had left Southampton just two and a half hours earlier, at 6:00 p.m.

A 57-year-old man from Exeter, England, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Authorities have not released the identities of either the victim or the suspect.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the senior investigating officer, emphasized that the event appears to be an isolated incident. “We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident on-board, and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries,” he said. He also encouraged any passengers with relevant information to come forward by calling the non-emergency police line at 101, referencing case number 44250193676.

Specialist officers are currently supporting the victim’s family during this difficult time.

In a statement to USA TODAY, MSC Cruises confirmed an incident had taken place aboard MSC Virtuosa and said they are fully cooperating with authorities. “We are providing full support to those impacted and thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time,” the cruise line added.

MSC Virtuosa is one of MSC’s flagship vessels, offering itineraries from the UK to various European destinations.
