Intense US Naval and Air Power Buildup Raises Prospect of Conflict With Iran

Ships in and out of Iran
The United States is rapidly increasing its naval and air power presence in the Middle East, a move that could lay the groundwork for a prolonged military confrontation with Iran. The growing deployment comes amid rising tensions and stalled diplomatic efforts over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that military action remains an option if negotiations fail to produce a new agreement to replace the nuclear deal the US withdrew from in 2018 during his first term. With talks remaining uncertain, Washington appears to be signaling its readiness to escalate.
Beyond the warships and aircraft now moving into the region, the United States already maintains tens of thousands of troops across multiple bases in the Middle East. Many of these installations could be exposed to Iranian retaliation in the event of open conflict, raising the stakes of any potential military campaign.
Growing US Naval Presence
According to a US official, Washington currently has 13 warships operating in the Middle East. This force includes one aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, supported by nine destroyers and three littoral combat ships. Additional vessels are expected to arrive in the coming days and weeks.
Meanwhile, the USS Gerald R. Ford—the world’s largest aircraft carrier—is transiting the Atlantic Ocean en route from the Caribbean to the Middle East. The carrier was ordered to the region earlier this month and is being escorted by three US Navy destroyers.
The presence of two US aircraft carriers in the Middle East at the same time is highly unusual. Each carrier strike group brings dozens of combat aircraft and thousands of sailors, representing a significant concentration of American firepower in a single region.
Echoes of Previous Strikes
The last time Washington deployed two aircraft carriers simultaneously to the Middle East was in June of last year, when the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites during Israel’s 12-day campaign of attacks against Iran. That episode underscored how quickly regional tensions can escalate into direct military action involving US forces.
