Authorities in Bonaire are searching for an American passenger who went missing during a stop on the Caribbean island while aboard Carnival Horizon.

According to a government news release, the passenger did not return to the ship following its visit to Bonaire on September 17. Local authorities are coordinating with the Public Entity of Bonaire, Port Authority, Tourism Corporation Bonaire, Carnival Cruise Line Security, and U.S. officials in the search.

The release stated:

“Local authorities are working with the Public Entity of Bonaire, the Port Authority, Tourism Corporation Bonaire, Carnival Cruise Line Security, the ship's security chief, and other partners. They are also in direct contact with Carnival Corporation and the U.S. authorities.”

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed to USA TODAY that the passenger had disembarked with her belongings, leaving a cash gratuity and thank-you note for the stateroom attendant. Later, she reportedly texted a member of Carnival’s Care Team, stating she was safe and did not want to be found or contacted again. In an emailed statement on September 22, Carnival said:

“While we are cooperating with local authorities, this guest appears to have taken deliberate action to be alone and on her own.”

Bonaire authorities noted in a September 20 statement that the passenger had her identification, but left behind some baggage and personal items on the ship.

The eight-day Southern Caribbean cruise had departed from Miami on September 13, according to CruiseMapper. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them via the anonymous tip line at 9310 or by calling 715 8000.
