The body of a man who went missing from a cruise ship off the coast of Scotland has been recovered following a multi-agency search and rescue operation.

The passenger was reported missing from Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition early Friday, Aug. 21, while the vessel was sailing from Lerwick to Dundee as part of its 2026 Solar Eclipse Cruise.

Cruise ship staff became aware that the guest was missing as the Ambition was sailing through the North Sea. Police Scotland received a report “that a man had gone overboard” from the ship at around 8:55 a.m. local time on Friday.

Police Scotland said the passenger reportedly fell from the vessel approximately 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife.

The body was subsequently located during the search operation. Police Scotland confirmed that the man has not yet been formally identified, but his family has been informed.

“There are no suspicious circumstances, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.” The cause of death is not yet known.

Search and Rescue Operation

The search involved multiple agencies, including the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard and Police Scotland.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said the U.K. emergency service “coordinated the response” to the initial report that a passenger had gone overboard.

In its original public statement, Ambassador Cruise Line said guests aboard the Solar Eclipse Cruise were “kept informed of developments” as the search continued.

The company also said, “a thorough ship-wide search was carried out on arrival in Dundee.” “Having initially been asked to remain on board while the search was carried out, guests have now been cleared to disembark,” the company said at the time.

Ambassador said the incident “slightly delayed” the cruise ship’s turnaround process, while passengers scheduled to travel aboard Ambition were instructed to proceed to the port according to their embarkation schedule.

Investigation Continues

Ambassador Cruise Line said it follows established procedures in response to incidents involving passengers at sea.

“Ambassador follows stringent search and rescue protocols in line with international maritime safety standards,” the British cruise line said Friday, noting that the company “remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our guests and crew.”

Police Scotland said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal as authorities continue their procedures following the recovery of the body.

The circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death have not yet been established.
