Two American passengers from Carnival Cruise Line died in separate drowning incidents in the Bahamas on Friday, according to officials.

The victims, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, were both visiting Celebration Key, a private destination for Carnival guests located on the south side of Grand Bahama. The resort includes beaches, lagoons, a water park, and restaurants.

In a statement, Carnival confirmed that one victim was sailing with family on Mardi Gras and the other was sailing with family on Carnival Elation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance,” the cruise line said.

First Incident

The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the first drowning occurred just before noon on Friday. The 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkeling at a beach. A lifeguard pulled him from the water, and CPR was administered, but he did not survive. He was later pronounced dead by a doctor.

Second Incident

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., officers responded to another call where they found a 74-year-old woman unresponsive aboard a commercial vessel. Police said the woman had become unresponsive while swimming in a pool. A lifeguard assisted her out of the water and performed CPR, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. She was also pronounced dead by a doctor.

Ongoing Investigation

Police have not released the identities of either victim. Authorities said autopsies will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“The investigation continues in both matters,” police added in their statement.
